For your interest I am posting a series of photos capturing the stages of an emerging Oil Portrait.
I have started by priming my canvas with a dark grey. I personally like painting on wooden boards, the painting surface is much smoother.
Then I “sketched” the image onto the canvas, using a fine brush and dark Umber. After that, I darkened the areas which appear to be in the shadows in the photo.
The next step was to apply color to the painting, and to start working out the details.
I’ll keep posting pictures as I go along.

The painting that really inspired me to continue was a portrait of my daughter. Painting from the heart I was able to capture one of her more serious, introspective moments. All too aware that she is growing up so quickly I want to capture aspects of her personality as often as possible.
